Posterior activity is not phase-reset by visual stimuli

چکیده
There is currently a debate as to whether event-related potentials and fields measured by using electroencephalography or magnetoencephalography are generated by ongoing oscillatory activity becoming phase-reset in response to a given stimulus. We performed a magnetoencephalography study measuring brain activity in response to visual stimuli. Using a measure termed the phasepreservation index we investigated the phase of oscillatory activity (8–13 Hz) before and after the stimulus. We found that in single trials the oscillations after visual stimuli preserve their phase relationship with respect to the phase before the stimuli. This finding argues against phase-resetting of ongoing oscillations as being responsible for visually evoked responses. The eventrelated field can be explained primarily by stimulus-locked activity in the band that is absent before the stimulus. These findings suggest that different neuronal events are responsible for generating the ongoing oscillations and the visually evoked responses.

Auditory modulation of visual stimulus encoding in human retinotopic cortex
Sounds can modulate visual perception as well as neural activity in retinotopic cortex. Most studies in this context investigated how sounds change neural amplitude and oscillatory phase reset in visual cortex. However, recent studies in macaque monkeys show that congruence of audio-visual stimuli also modulates the amount of stimulus information carried by spiking activity of primary auditory ...

Introduction: Encoding models are used to predict human brain activity in response to sensory stimuli. The purpose of these models is to explain how sensory information represent in the brain. Convolutional neural networks trained by images are capable of encoding magnetic resonance imaging data of humans viewing natural images. Considering the hemodynamic response function, these networks are ...
متن کاملThe Leading Sense: Supramodal Control of Neurophysiological Context by Attention
Attending to a stimulus enhances its neuronal representation, even at the level of primary sensory cortex. Cross-modal modulation can similarly enhance a neuronal representation, and this process can also operate at the primary cortical level. Phase reset of ongoing neuronal oscillatory activity has been shown to be an important element of the underlying modulation of local cortical excitabilit...
متن کاملTheta oscillations index human hippocampal activation during a working memory task.
Working memory (WM) is the ability to retain and associate information over brief time intervals. Functional imaging studies demonstrate that WM is mediated by a distributed network including frontal and posterior cortices, hippocampus, and cerebellum. In rodents, the presentation of stimuli in a WM task is followed by a reset of the phase of hippocampal theta. In this paper we report the obser...
